Pot question

Hi,

I recently finished a project that has a pot, and the shaft is too long.  Is it ok to cut down?  (Is it just metal and as simple as cutting it with a hacksaw?)

Thanks,

Dave

You can cut it no problem a hacksaw is a little rough as you may torque the body of the pot. I would use a dremel or similar. If you do have to use a hacksaw be gentle

So I would probably have to rotate the pot completely in the same direction that the dremel spins (so the shaft doesn't spin at the same time).  Will this make a lot of metal filings?  The pot is already installed, so possible shorts are a concern too :)

A good cutter in a Dremel running fast will whizz through the shaft before it knows what's happening but turn the shaft to it's end stop one way or the other. Lay the bit of kit on its side and protect the facia with tin foil, metal filings should drop onto the bench. The job can be done quicker than it takes to describe it.

They are usually a form of alloy and as soft as butter.  Just grab the end in a vice than cut it off with a hacksaw.
