Help Please, Windows Media Player Refuses To "Rip"

If your HD is only 24% full that is not the problem, searching MS support shows WMP has a few bugs, (no surprise there.) I found this but I am not sure it is the same problem, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-sound/after-ripping-12-cds-i-now-receive-an-error-saying/36d8062e-a7f4-4c9e-b98b-a63923fc9e72, can't hurt to read it anyway. You know Grainger I am a long time Apple user but I don't like ITunes either, When I rip cds or dvds I run Windows and rip using dbpoweramp, of course I am ripping everything to FLAC using error correction, but I get the best results with this software than any other I have tried.

Cheers,
Shawn

Hey,

Time to get rid of the media player.

Go here http://www.foobar2000.org/download, download the lastest stable program. Install Foobar to a directory of your chosing.

To encode MP3's I recommend LAME.  Go here http://lame-mp3-encoder.soft32.com/free-download?gclid=CNer5qDErq8CFREr7AodphzIoQ and download it.  Run the exe file and be sure to use the advanced installation in step two. Uncheck the two options.  Since I have LAME already installed, the lame installer just copied over that installation.  If the installer does not offer a path for you to chose or tells you where it put LAME, you will have to do a search when you use the converter in Foobar.  Foobar needs to know where LAME is to use it.

To use the converter in Foobar, open Foobar and stick your CD in the drive.  Tell Foobar to open the audio cd in the file menu.  It will open a dialog box and rip will be option at the bottom of the dialog box.  Click on 'rip' and guess what! another dialog box opens.  It will give you info on the cd about to be ripped.  click on the highlighted option and you go to the rip dialog box. Make sure the options are what you want and then click convert.  The first time you do this foobar will ask where LAME is.  After you tell it that, it will remember.

I know this sounds like a lot, but it is much simpler than it sounds.  And foobar has many advantages over media player such as gapless playback and supports almost any format.  Plus in XP ypu can use ASIO support.

If you don't want to go thru this, you may need to backup your rig and do a clean install of XP.  That will fix your problem.  If it doesn't you'll have to start replacing hardware.

Alex, The drive has lots of space but for some reason the Media Player doesn't have a pull down menu for tools.  Reading at the MS site everyone is saying to go to "Tools" and check where the files are stored.  This could be the problem, and maybe not.  If I go to the library it displays some or all of the ripped CDs.  It just depends on when I go as to how many of my ripped CDs it shows.

It could be that it sees the files but doesn't have a proper path for storing rips.  I'll putz around and see if I can find where it is designated.

Shawn, I will check this link out later today.

Peter, does Foobar work on XP?  Will it recognize all my previously ripped CDs?  I'm using Firefox and Thunderbird because they were recommended here.  They are a vast improvement over IE and Inbox.  Maybe Foobar is the answer?

Grainger, Foobar will be fine XP. I've used it on an XP laptop I have. It has support for hi rez files and is pretty intuitive to use. I think you would be happy with it.

Cheers,
Shawn

Grainger, if you can't get to the settings in MP, then 100% something is wrong with the MP installation. You may try to uninstall MP and re-install it again or use sometnig else, footbar could be is one of the solutions.
To uninstall: go to "contol panel" >>Add or remove programm >> Add/remove windows component>> find and un-select checkbox for MP>>OK
Reboot PC.
Do then as above, you will need to check box for MP in the "Add/remove windows component"

Alex,

Ok, one more time.  I removed Media Player and rebooted.  Then downloaded MP 11 from the MS site.

Media Player opened at the end of the install.  I don't see any album covers, but do see all my ripped software.  That is an improvement in itself.

Putting in Rumours again and .  .  .   I think it is ripping automatically.  Let's see.

Nope it says it can't read the CD, or the next CD put into the DVD drive.  The same CD in the CDR drive seems fine.  It might be the drive.  It even ripped from the CDR drive.  And now I can see a majority of the album covers.  Possibly it takes time to download them all????

Ok, I am getting the CDR to rip.  So a combination of things.

Regardless, I am looking into Foobar!  I'm tired of all this MS mess.  Maybe some day an Apple, but not today.

Correct.  Album covers are downloaded. If you can Rip from one of the drives, then MP is OK.  BTW, CD, CDW, DVD, DVDW all should read CDs if hardware and driver software are OK.
But again, if you can rip from any of the CD devices, MP is working.

Yup, I am good for now.

The DVD drive used to read CDs.  It did yesterday, I played the Rumours that it wouldn't play today.

Hey Granger -

I can relate to ripping frustrations! I think part of the cause is the new copy protection, I have an older Vista laptop that seems to rip the 'unrippable' cds that I have. Hold down the shift key when inserting the cd. Keep it down until the program loads the cd. I also have several good rippers to choose from. First choice is EAC and Dbpoweramp. I STILL have a cd that, for the life of me I cant rip - Radiohead 'Ok Computer'. Crazy copy protection or something. Not bad though for almost 1000 cds ripped to hard drive!

For good copies of a CD in CD form I use EAC too.  I just like to have some music when working on the desktop computer.

I don't believe that EAC can't copy your Radiohead CD.  It has never failed me.

I don't have the Radiohead CD.  But I have had CDs that skipped and repeated that EAC copied.  I leave it overnight to take care of problem CDs.

Downloaded Media Player again and it works now.

Thanks to everyone who helped.
