First Build in 57 Years

My first HI-Fi was based on an Eico 12 Watt Amp kit and a Heathkit FM tuner built during the summer of 1959. Just finished a Crack. Am delighted with the amp, and pretty delighted with myself. Will enjoy as is for a while, and then add the Speedball that I purchased along with it. Btw, using Sennheiser 650s and they're a super match.

That's a great colour choice I think it really suits the Crack. You have some nice looking bits of kit I'm sat listening to my headphones and my own humble turntable set up at the moment and couldn't help but notice you have  a rather nice looking turntable yourself and wondering what model it is?

M. Mc Candles- Thanks. Love the old radios. Have several more plus a bunch of old film cameras which I actually use.

Jamie McC- The turntable is a recent upgrade, a VPI Prime. Cart is an Ortofon Cadenza Bronze.

Oh man, I remember that Heathkit tuner. Sometime around 1960 - I was in the 8th grade I think - I acquired one in not-working condition from a friend of my father's. I fixed it by looking for bad solder joints, and enjoyed it for many years afterwards.

Dave, Speakers are Emerald Physics EPx's. Result of spending too much time on the internet, but worth it. Believe they sound as good as many speakers costing 4 or 5 times as much.

Interested in what you think of the VPI Prime, assuming you have had it for a while. For your next kit you should consider an Eros, it is a great phono preamp that should work great with your Ortofon.

I second the Eros.  Mine is still breaking in, but it seems to love my Ortofon quintet bronze and Cinemags.

How do the epx's sound?  Just looked up the webpage and the tube loading for the woofer looks really cool!  Cylinders are pretty good for bass too.

Dale, Have the Prime for about 7 months. Upgraded from a VPI Scout 1.1. Upgraded cart from a Ortofon 2M Black. Definitely a step up, even more musical. Could be the heavier platter, could be the 10" 3D arm, could be the 300 rpm motor, could be the cartridge, but the combination of things is fabulous.

Jay, thanks for your additional input re the Eros. I am using a Bob's Devices SUT Which I believe uses Cinemag transformers.

Dave, I really like the EPx's. They work great in my rather unusually shaped room. Walter has added the EPx Pro's since I got mine. Look very interesting as I wouldn't mind a tad more sparkle in the top end though no one who's listened to the current set up has been unhappy with the speakers nor critical in any way.
