Well Worth the Wait - My New Crack

Hello All-

First, I have to send a huge thank you to Dan and Eileen. I live about an hour and a half from Bottleheadquarters so I made the trip up to visit the shop and pick up my Stereomour and Speedball kits a couple days ago. If you have the chance to visit them I definitely recommend it. The time I spent there was easily the most enjoyable retail experience I've ever had - really it was just plain fun. The system upstairs that Doc has put together sounds fantastic. And I even got a little sneak peak into the lab!

As for my Crack, I finished it tonight and I am extremely pleased with the sound. The background is absolutely dead silent, I've got no microphonics at all, and it is just so musical. I'm not going to try to describe what I hear, but it truly is excellent. The Speedball will be going in after a couple weeks.

The woodwork is a bit down and dirty. I cut the base using a coping saw and fixed the mistakes with an orbital sander. It was somewhat a proof of concept experiment, I plan to replicate the shape using zebra wood sometime in the future.

The cables I made using Belden 1505 and some plugs from PE. I'll be making a few more sets for all the rest of the pieces in my system.

The photos aren't the greatest, but it can be hard to find good natural light during a Pacific northwest winter!

I must say I am very, very satisfied with my experience with Bottlehead. Now to start work on my Stereomour.

Thanks Evan, it was our pleasure having you visit. Last week was really fun, as we had visitors almost every day. Everyone is welcome to come by for a listen, just give us a call ahead so we can make sure we have the system up and running for you.

Yeah, real nice!.... Very clean... and I have to say, before, I just wasnt all that keen about the Bottlehead badge design.. But, as time went on it got better and better and now, I like it!!! haha just call me "late to the party"... :) funny how that works sometimes...

Thanks everyone for the really nice compliments! I'll admit the base design was heavily influenced by the beautiful kits Rubylow put together. I spent a lot of time looking at finished kits trying to decide just how I wanted mine to look.

Chris, what really appeals to me is the elegant but simple visual design of the Bottlehead kits. I quite like Dan's brushed aluminum chassis plates. It adds just the right amount of visual "flair" without detracting from those glowing tubes.

Yep, totally agree.. I happen to like the natural alder tone with the aluminum as it is..  I was not talking about the kit itself, I was talking about the BADGE.. I really liked the "quickly came and even quicker went" badge with the words BOTTLEHEAD... But, what I was trying to say is now, I am warming up nicely to the Bottlehead Logo badge design currently available....:)

I've only seen one with a badge like that and as far as i know it was a one off?
I designed that one a while back and had two made, one for a S.E.X. and one for a Crack. Before anyone contacts me (I've literally received like 50 emails about that badge), they are not available for sale, the name Bottlehead only belongs to the fine people here and not to me ;) Aside from that, they were about 15x the price of the stock bottlehead badges  :P

Hi,

I am totally new here...this is my first post. I just finished building my Crack kit yesterday and have to say that your assembly/wiring job is really nice looking. Love the case idea as well and the thought of building another using Zebrawood just made the lightbulb go on for me! Bubinga, Cocobolo, Desert Ironwood....so many cool woods to consider.

Cheers,

Thanks for the compliment on the wiring. I actually just finished the urethane coating on my zebra wood base and will get some new photos after I put badges on the front. I am extremely pleased with the new look.

New here as we'll.  Done some DIY before but just ordered my first Crack kit.  If you go down the exotic wood route I'd be interested to hear how it goes and definitely see some pics.  Was also thinking about zebra wood or cocobolo veneer.  Thanks
