Turn-on crackle and other noises

My Quicksand (about a year old) just started giving a crackle (not a thump) on start-up and then a pulsing thwack starts: it is not constant but occurs rhythmically about 10 seconds apart. I installed new batteries and it was still present. Any suggestions?

I'd carefully inspect your solder joints, and be sure that the chip is well seated in the 20 pin socket.
