Speedball impressions: is something wrong?

I guess I'm in same boat as the other folks from this thread, I built my Crack and absolutely loved the sound; after giving it a listen for about a week - added the small Speedball board and got thrown away. I've tried to let my ears adjust for a few days but nope, didn't like it.. so I pulled it out and put the 22.1K resistors back.
Now it's all back good again - but I have never even tried the large Speedball board - and now - I don't even know if I should. Guys who removed the small board keeping the large one in - how do you feel if changes from the large board alone are worth it?

For everyone who experienced these impression after installing the speedball I'd suggest checking out a Mullard CV4003 before giving up on the speedball. It really brings back some of that mid range magic without the added distortion.
