Solutions for rust on transformer cover?

Hey guys,

I'm noticing some early stages of rust on the top transformer cover plate on my amp. I'm not super picky, but am concerned that if it gets too far, it could cause other issues, aesthetics aside.

What have others here done to resolve the rust issue? Note: Mine is "stock" from kit, so I haven't painted it.

Hello Mark,

With some fine steel wool, you can burnish up the rust a bit, then mask of the cover where it sits and spray paint it.

If you're not too into the look of painting over your screw heads, plain old clear lacquer will work just fine and not look unusual, you will just have to continue rubbing on that transformer cover until it looks appealing.

If you're feeling very adventurous, you can move your masking down and lacquer the transformer lamination stack as well.

If you want to paint the cover in place can also use any petroleum based jelly to cover the screws when you paint it. Just make sure to clean the area around them on the cover with alcohol to ensure you didn't get a bit on it.

Once the paint has cured for at least a few days just wipe it off.

Also, if you are gentle about it, and patient, you can remove the screws and cover, paint it and then put it back on. The washers can be a bit tricky with the reassembly, but it is doable.
