Running S.E.X. 4 as a Monoblock?

Hi all,

I understand the new S.E.X. 4 can be run in mono for ~8 W. Could Bottlehead clarify:

  • What’s the official wiring method for monoblock use?
  • Does the headphone jack remain functional when wired mono, or is it disabled?

You'd have to disable the headphone jack in order to accomplish this, then wire the output transformers in series (when wired for half the intended load) and parallel the input jacks.

Given that the SEX 4 makes more than twice the power of the SEX 3, we don't really expect there to be a ton of demand for performing this modification, but if you have two SEX 4 amps in front of you, we can walk you through it.

Thank you PB
I was considering adding switching, but decided to forgo that. After looking at it, I think it would be simpler to just re-wire back to stereo if needed. I’m leaning toward building two S.E.X. 4s so I can run them in mono for extra power on my loudspeakers and also use them with my K1000s. Since I have a Mainline, I don’t mind losing the headphone out.

I know it's a bump in price over a pair of SEX4s but you might consider the Kaiju if one of the operating conditions is running K1000s. That's a really nice match with the 300Bs helping to flesh out the bottom end of the K1Ks. I ran Paramounts, which were more or less the predecessor of Kaiju, with K1000s for a while as a demo system for Tape Project tapes at trade shows. That setup got a lot of positive commentary over the years.

The other benefit of a Kaiju is that we can ship those now. We're a couple weeks out on the next run of SEX 4.

Given the synergy you’ve highlighted with the K1000s and the benefits for my speakers, I think it makes more sense for me to focus on the Kaiju instead. The added headroom and low-end extension sound like a better long-term fit for what I’m after.

That said, I still want to build a S.E.X. 4 at some point, since I began my Bottlehead journey with a S.E.X. 2.1 and have a soft spot for that amp.

Appreciate the advice, it’s helped me decide where to put my energy next.
