Purple Quickie/ODAC

Well, I can finally say that project number one is finished. Presented for the approval of the committee in partial fulfillment of the degree of BS of Bottlehead, is my "Husky Proud" purple Quickie.

I wanted a solution that could handle the three inputs that I generally use: turntable, mobile source for parties and such, and computer input for high quality digital. I added a third input to the Quickie by removing the D-cell control from the three way selector and wiring an on/off toggle in. Then I hard wired an ODAC (from JDS Labs and NwAvGuy - no affiliation) to the selector switch. The nice thing about the ODAC is that it's all USB powered, so there's no need to fuss with power supply issues. I also added the PJCCS. The base is finished with Miniwax Cherry and a semigloss poly. A few squishy plastic feet from the HoDepot help with dampening and allow the USB cord to slide under the bottom. I "homebrewed" some interconnects, faux-bottlenects if you will, as well.

I am really pleased with my first foray into DIY audio. The Quickie made an instant and extremely noticeable impact on my humble system. The PJCCS seems to have really tightened resolution. The ODAC makes a noticeable difference in resolution and soundstage compared to running music from my macbook's headphone out.

I'm looking forward to the road ahead. Playing with caps and tubes will be a lot of fun I think. I know a reduction and SEX, along with some Blumenstein Orcas, are in my future when the budget affords. Thanks for everyone's support on the forum - I've enjoyed the community here every bit as much as the project itself.

Regards to all,

The Q looks great!  Fussing with power often times leads to audible improvements, especially getting away from a noisy 5V rail coming out of a computer.

PB - That makes sense. The ODAC fit nicely for this application though, keeping everything self contained an "off the wall". It provides a nice sonic improvement over running my computer's audio through the headphone jack, so I'm happy with it here. At some point down the line, I'm sure I'll get fancier.  ;)

Grainger - Yup. The line out of the ODAC goes right into the 3 way selector.
