This thread can be for anyone needing PC help.  I always get my answers from this community.  I have posted on other boards, I don't get good or serious answers.

I have been trying every photo program (system is Windows XP Professional)  I can call up to resize a photograph before posting.  MS PhotEditer won't even open a picture from my camera, they are too large for the program.  Paint opens them but can't display the whole picture.  I think it might resize the photo, but don't know where to call it up to resize it.

Any help will be appreciated.

The version of Paint in Windows 7 has a convenient resize option - I used it for my facebook posts on vacation, cutting 4000x3000 pixel files down to 400x300. The older version on my XP machine does not do that.

Irfanview is a free download that will re-size and re-sample (and will do hundreds of other things). I've used it, but it's so powerful that it's a hassle to find the few simple things us ordinary mortals need.

If you sign up for a free Imageshack account, then upload your photos, there is a resize option built in that's very handy.

You can then just download the image from there with the new sizing.

I use arcsoft photo 2000 which came free with a camera I bought.  It's easy to use, you can resize to anything you want, change resolution (dots/inch), rotate, crop, all the fun stuff.

All of the pics I post are processsed thru it and hosted on flickr.

Still free

Paul J,

I should have put this in the OP, and will.  I am running Windows XP Professional.  I'll put Infanview on my list of look at downloads.  Thanks!

Paul B,

I have all my hosted pictures, for Bottlehead threads and FB, on Photobucket.  If I move them, they will disappear from my posts.  I should look into Photobucket to see if they have a sizing option I can set as default.

Mike,

That one looks to be a free download.  That might do me.  And then I can dump a few programs that I find useless.  I prefer to keep my desktop (PC) and hard drive free of clutter.

I don't do Windows. I use Linux Mint which is based on Debian Linux. Many of the Linux distributions now bundle an open source image editor called, "gimp." I know, its a funny name. But it is a very powerful photo editing software that is comparable to "Photo Shop." The main difference is that, gimp is open source so its FREE (you can make a donation if you like the program). Gimp will allow you to resize images based on inches, millimeters, centimeters, pixels, percentage etc. Gimp is available for Windows XP SP3 and higher.

I probably won't change to a new and unknown to me operating system any time soon.  I have heard good things about Linux.  It came from AT&T/Bell Labs like UNIX and C++.

But old dog, etc.

Have a second look at the free software that came with your camera, often there is something designed to share or email photos that will get the job done.

I have Picasa, from Google on my computer. It has worked for me but I won't recommend it ether way because I suck at this :D...John

My fiancee was showing me a site called Pic Monkey (picmonkey.com) last night which has all kinds of simple editing features and is all online - just upload and edit, resize, etc. Looks pretty good.

I need to check.  I bought my Sony DSLR used and may not have gotten the usual software.  Maybe I could download it from the Sony site.

Good suggestions all coming in.

Thanks guys.  When I get home from HFH tomorrow morning I'll do some searching.

You don't need to change. Like I said, "gimp" runs under Windows.

Grainger,

Save yourself some time and headache, download Faststone like mcandmar said... it's fantastic I've been using it for quite a few years now and LOVE it. Plus free is a very good price ;)

In photobucket I have my upload settings set to 1024x768 with the option to display original size unchecked.

So for example this image shouldn't take up the whole screen.

Now if I want to show the original full size pic I can enlarge it on its photobucket page to original size.  Then I just copy the link for the full size image and I can put that in here as a separate link.

Photobucket made some changes a while back and I am still adapting to them.  For instance, I have a duplicated picture and can't figure out how to delete one of them.

I may never find the upload default settings.

I understand that.  It takes a bit of playing with to find everything.  For deleting a pic go to that folder and when you see the pic you want to delete, hover your cursor over it.  A gear symbol should show up in the corner of the pic.  Move the cursor over that and a list of options should appear.  The last option is delete.

For user settings click on your user name in the upper right section of the page.  Click on User Settings.  Click on the "Albums" tab and go down to "Customize Upload Options"  and click on that.  Then you should get a pop-up like this.

As long as you're on the Albums tab make sure you have "IMG Code" checked under Links.  That gives you an easy link to the pic that works on this forum.  You can just paste the link directly into the text box.
