Paramounts

Well, I finished my two Paramounts ! Next week, I will start to put together the Bee-Pre. Here is a photo.  For those who may be interested, the base is finished with  Pimento Burl  wood veneer; I applied about 20 coats of high gloss Minwax wipe-on polly.  The base of the Bee-Pre gets the same finish.

Very nice case work the time taken to go the extra mile and do the 20 coats was well spent. Reminds me about the quote on quality being appreciated long after the effort/cost has been forgotten.

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.

Actually, the Minwax stuff is not that hard to put on....it just takes a small tiny cloth and a lot of patience. I sanded between each coat from 220 to 2000 grit.  For some reason the high gloss does not show on that photo.  If one prefers, Minwax makes the same product in a satin finish.

What took time is the Pimento burl veneer. Its very fragile to work with,- but I found that things became easier once I acquired a small hand tool made especially for cutting veneer; to use anything else other than that dedicated tool does not really work well

The Bee-Pre base is getting the same treatment.

The adhesive used is called "Better Bond Cold Press Veneer Adhesive".  Since the veneer used was raw [no paper backing], I had to clamp the veneer under pressure. This is quite easy for such a small piece of work.

Lately, I built a pair of Cornu spiral speakers and finished the front with veneer. This was 27" x 27" and I used contact cement. It was too large to clamp.  Contact cement works fine, but it allows for no repositioning.

I attach a photo of the tool used for cutting veneer.  The tool, the glue and the instructions can all be found on a web site called veneersupplies.com. If you get this little tool, it's recommended to pay $7.90 to get it sharpened it the manner described on the website

Since the photo was lost in the change to the new forum server, I thought I would re-post it.
