Input and shunt tube questions

Good day :-)

I want to ask why two 6AQ5 tubes were chosen as shunt regulators when a single 6AQ5 could shunt the 12AU7 aswell. Also, why was the 12AU7 chosen over the 6SN7 for the stock circuit?

Do you want dual mono regulated power supplies for your headphone amp, or a single regulated power supply for both channels? We chose dual mono. The 6AQ5 is not the limiting factor in doing a single shunt regulator for the whole amp.

Can you plug a 12AU7 into a 6080 socket?

You would have to adjust the socket obviously, but Im asking because Ive read often Bottlehead recommending this change and of users buying an adapter noval ->octal. So if Bottlehead recommends a 6SN7 for better sound, why not just do it as stock?

We don't recommend it for better sound, we suggest it as an option for tube rolling. Different strokes for different folks.

It's the last tube listed here so we can call out that it requires an adapter. We make no claims about what sounds better because that's completely dependent on the 6SN7, the headphone, the 6080 also in the circuit, the music, and - crucially - the preferences of the listener.
