Help Please, Windows Media Player Refuses To "Rip"

I am once again asking the Bottlehead community for computer help.  Ok, I'm an idiot when it comes to these things.  And you guys introduced me to Firefox and Thunderbird, which I have used for years now.  And now I need more help.

For some reason my Media Player refuses to rip any CD I put into it.  It also doesn't recognize many of the CDs that have already been ripped.  When I go to the "Library" none of the CDs I have ripped show the album cover.

And then there is the previously mentioned problem it won't copy any of the new CDs I have received.

Any help will be appreciated.

Update of information:

Restored to over a month ago.

Drive is 25% filled.

I have changed the bit rate, no difference.

Both drives are set to digital with no error correction.

CCleaned often and defragged often.

Downloaded and reinstalled Media Player.

Both the CDR and DVD drive play CD with Media Player fine.

Are your CDs factory burnt Redbook CDs and not SACDs or copied material? Can you see the CD via Explorer?

Also, what format are your audio files in now? If they are not in a FLAC or AIFF format then the covers will not show up. Have you tried iTunes? It runs on Windows, is free, and though a pain at times it is not bad at all for ripping CDs.

Yoder,

Thanks for replying....  They are factory burned CDs.  Some are old, from the 90s.  I will check, maybe the old ones will burn.

Windows Media Player is set up to rip MP3 files.  It is just for listening on the computer.

As for iTunes, it acts like a virus on a PC clone.  It causes problems with other programs.  I would prefer not to use it.

Did you recently download a Widoze update? Did the update, perhaps, not run correctly?

Can you try to do a Windoze update again?

This Widoze Media Player support page sound like it relates to your problem?

I haven't downloaded an update recently.  I don't remember the last time I did update it.

I have gone to the Windows update page and there is no media player update, actually no updates for my XP software at all.

My problem is with ripping.  It plays all those that have been ripped, but doesn't display any album covers now.

Do you get any kind of error message?

Have you tried to rip to a format other then MP3? WMA?

I would start by doing a Windows Update as suggested above, and then update your media software also. How much RAM are you running? You may also have a lot of different services that are running in the background that are slowing things down? You can download an app such as CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner to turn off certain services, and clean-up your disk, and registry. You may also want to defrag your disk if you do not do it on a regular basis. Ultimately though, you may want to convert all of your CDs to lossless AIFF files. Since I do not use Windows anymore, I am not sure if you can do such conversions with Windows Media Player.

Hey Grainger, as Yoder said defrag your HD. Also look at how full the HD is. Rip programs set up a temporary cache on the HD, an overly full drive can cause malfunctions. You might even try a stand alone rip program, such as dbpoweramp, excellent software for Windows.

Cheers,
Shawn

Kevin, Yes the message is, Windows Media Player can not rip one or more of the tracks from the CD.

When it goes to the internet it says, You've encountered error message C00D10D2 while using Windows Media Player. Additional information is not currently available for this error.

Under Technical Details it says, This error might have been triggered by an error in another program or component of Windows. The following information describes the original error.

Under Additional Assistance it refers me to three links.

I haven't tried to rip to any other formats, just MP3.  I'll try.  Thanks!

Yoder, I don't know how much RAM I have but it has been working for a year with the RAM I have.  I keep my startup file clean of unwanted programs to keep the RAM available.  I run AutoCad Lite, it is hard on RAM, it works flawlessly.  I think we are barking up the wrong tree for RAM.

I use CCleaner often and defrag often as well.  As computer ignorant as I am, I learn from guys like you that give me the right suggestions.  Both of those have become routine.

Shawn, the HD with the system on it is ... oops, got to full screen and can't get out of it, told you guys I'm a clutz.  More later.

Shawn, the HD with system files and program files is less than 25% full.  My user files are on another drive.

Just checking My Documents/My Music I have 42 file folders with a lot of albums.  WMP recognizes . . .  well not it sees every album I burned with many of the album covers.  I'll try to burn an old Fleetwood Mac Rumours... it refuses again.

Dan, iTunes doesn't like XP and PCs in general.  I have used it and it doesn't play well with those.

Glenn, OOooo ... I'll try that, Thanks! ! !

Found this on Wiki-Errors, maybe it will help.

Glenn, spent $30 on the fix and it didn't fix it.  It fixed thousands of errors I didn't know I had but not the Media player.  Maybe this is one of Wikipedia's mistakes?

I will try again after restarting the computer.  Maybe that is the key?  I will also try a restore.

Did you check if you cd/DVD is reading discs at all. Just insert data cd and try to copy random files.
Also, not sure if you mentioned it, is your media player actually plays audio cd ? Is it just ripping not working or audio cd is not accessible by MP ?

Yes, both drives read and play using Media Player.

I have changed the bit rate, no difference.

Both drives are set to digital with no error correction.

Apple is not an option.  I buy a computer once every 6 years or so.  I put cash into my stereo rather than my computer.

Ok.  Let's see. The error you've getting is one of microsofts umbigues messages. Generally it speaks about file system error - disk is unreadable, filesystem is full or config is corrupted.
Obviously source is ok, if you can read , play etc.
Config, I guess is ok as we'll if you restored from backup.
Check hard disc space and default path to where MP is placing ripped files. Is this path valid ? Is there anough disk space ? Try to change settings and save new one, you can change it  back again, just force MP re-fresh config.
Let my know.
