DIY Hi-Fi rack

I came across the idea on Head-Fi of building a rack using chopping boards from IKEA. After a quick browse of the catalog i found the perfect size chopping board in 16mm thick Bamboo, the legs are also IKEA items. Total cost for the build was under €50.

Boards used are http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/80233430/ €9.75 each, or $8.
Legs used are http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/60196513/ €5.00 for pack of two.

Double stacking the legs gives 8" clearance which is the perfect height for my S.E.X amp.  Each set of legs comes with two lengths of threaded rod which is used to join the legs together.  The four plastic feet left over can then be cut up to salvage the metal bolts which are used to mount the top shelf.  Only bit of fab work needed was to chisel out the recess's for the bolts on the top shelf and then drill four holes in each panel. The wood finish is exactly how they come so i didnt need to do any treatment to them.

Thought it was worth sharing here as i suspect the Bamboo would compliment a pair of Blumenstein speakers rather nicely ;)

Super idea Mark and a great job, going to have a go at it myself when next I get off the Island I feel Bamboo enclosure for a Crack might be on the boards as well.

^ nice pun.  With your woodworking skills i'm sure you could knock up a few full range speaker cabinets with the stuff :)

Now there's a thought, I have been planning a trip to Ikea the other half was looking at some of the billy bookcases so will have to take the car over on the ferry its a bit of a rip off at £80 return for the 60 minute trip each way 10 mile :'( ! At least the store is close when you get to the mainland

Shipping stuff is a real hassle at times just yesterday I wanted to order some 22mm glass fibre rod from the factory that makes it cost £10 for a metre shipping to a mainland address is £15 via their courier service to a mainland address which is fine but when I mentioned I was on the Island the shipping cost went to £35 I asked if they would send via regular mail or parcel force as it would be less than £10 but no chance. I found another supplier who was more helpful.
 
Sounds like you need to buy a boat :)    ...dont get me started about shipping prices.  N.Ireland is mainland UK rates, Southern Ireland is x2-x4 times the cost and the only difference is 100miles of motorway and an invisible border!

Thanks for the heads up on the boards.

A couple of questions for you:

1.  what did you use to make the holes.  Bamboo is pretty durable.
2.  I am interesting in how you made the hex bolt fit in.

Holes were just a regular wood drill bit (the ones with a point), for the hex's i just marked around the bolt with a pencil then chiseled it out.  The heads of the bolts are ~2mm thick so you don't have to dig very much out.
 
I quiet like the look of the recessed bolt heads its a nice feature I'm wondering if I have a bit of a fossick about I might even root out some brass or bronze bolts.

I am guessing t would be easy enough to fit a big head fastener on the underside if you wanted to keep the top clear.

Here is my approach. I've built the entire shelf from bamboo, sanded and waxed it. The joints have been made using biscuits and glue and I am using sorbothane feet.
