DAC recommendations - 2026

I've been enjoying my Bottlehead Crack a lot. With a pair of HD6XXs, a winged C 6H13C, and a Mullard 12AU7 - I've got a sound that I love for listening to pretty much anything.
I can tell my DAC is the current weak link. Youtube music or Spotify on max settings both sound good to my ears, but I definitely get a different sound depending on what's feeding the Crack. The apple dongle works great in a pinch but I've plugged in some other sources and realized it doesn't let the low end bass come through as clear as I'd like.

I haven't seen this asked in 5-10 years so I thought I'd ask - any DAC recommendations in the <$300 range? Used is fine too. Just looking for something with USB input to set on my desk at work and hook my laptop or phone to the bottlehead.

The Schiit line has always been recommended. The older Modiis have been discontinued, I like the look of the Modii 5 but I read mixed reviews on the "Mesh" filter system in it. Beyond that I like the look of the Mimir but got myself turned around wondering if it does or does not need a Forkbeard...

Fosi ZH3 also has my eye, seems reviewed as having a clean sound.

Curious what you all are listening to.

My general buying philosophy for something like that these days is to try to buy based on the DAC chip if at all possible. Avoid any DAC part number that has an "M" in it, as the mobile versions of a lot of these chipsets can sound a bit lifeless, and you're not really conserving a noticeable amount of power if you're running things from the wall.

I haven't heard one, but I'd be willing to bet that the SMSL D200 would be about the best current choice if you want to buy new. Otherwise, you could look at ESS 9038 Pro or ESS 9039 Pro DACs in the used market, which shouldn't be too hard to find within your budget.

Thanks Paul that's a great point. I hadn't heard of the SMSL D200 but it looks feature rich. The Schiit Mimir at $299 uses the 9038 chip. Food for thought for sure thank you!
