First, congratulations, Grainger on getting your own personal corner of the forum. Richly deserved.

Second, apologies to all for my absence for the last 9 months or so. I have been plagued by ear infections, first one, then the other. This manifested itself by having one ear 20db down on the other. (Quite difficult to talk, impossible to sing and have new-found sympathy for the deaf.) Oddly, while going through this trying time, I found that my Crack + Sennheisers was preferable to my Parasex + Lowthers. It did dent my enthusiasm for audio projects but I'm better now and very glad to be back.

John,

Thanks!  I'm sorry to hear about the hearing problems.  I'd rather lose my sight than lose my hearing.  Music is that important to me.

Did listening to headsets allow you to balance the music to your brain?

I hadn't considered the aspect of "balancing the music to my brain" but although things still sounded wrong with headphones, the "level of wrongness" seemed much lower. (Sorry, difficult sensation to describe...)

that is because part of our hearing is through Bone Induction... Part air induction and part bone.. headphones will stimulate greater amounts of vibration in bone than i would imagine a speaker would...

It's like listening to life underwater. Quite disturbing. I have had some infections myself, and hope there is never another. I am the same as some of you who say that hearing is more important to me than sight. For some reason, I have depended greatly on my hearing more than most people. Noticing that every room sounds different, recognizing a person for sure as soon as they speak, and so forth. But it seems that many people take their hearing for granted, or even abuse it unknowingly. So I am also happy to hear that your infection has given way to health.
