Computers Are Out To Destroy Your Brain !

Ok I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes.  I have gotten 2 pop ups since I started writing this.

Malwarebyes scanned 385,981 files, found and deleted 2, 417 files.  But not the ones needed.  I tried a restore to last month to no avail.

I still have no menus.  This has to end or I'll take the .357 and shoot the computer.  I just don't have enough meds to contend with this kind of $hit.

Still, nothing I am used to works on my desktop.  I have sent an email to my buddy who takes care of our computer needs.  He was a student, a good one, of my mother in law.  She taught all the AP math courses.  He will win where I have lost.

Still, I advise to stay away from the update.

For starters, just restore your computer to a previous date, then deal with the malware the way the others posters have suggested... OR wait for your friend and keep a watchful eye on what he is doing while your .357 is firmly ready in your hand.. :)

The latter method will ensure both your computer and friend WILL cooperate and get the job done....

I did a restore last night, no change.

I did a scan this morning, no change.

I think Michael will make it all good.  He does a remote desktop and picks out all the bugs.

Strange, malwarebytes should have killed it.  What is the default webpage when you open firefox?    I'm wondering if it has changed to a dodgy site so it can auto install the little gremlin every time you open firefox.

Grainger,
what about using Linux?

Talk with your friend about it and, in the meantime, use a live distro from cd.

Ciao

Yes, Firefox knows nothing.  Not my home page, not my passwords, nothing.  It opens on something I strongly suspect is a phishing site and fights me getting to Bottlehead.

Michael has cleaned this kind of thing up on the laptop a few years back.  I suppose he will do the same for the desktop.

Bonzo,  I am not looking to start all over again.

Don't worry Grainger!
Linux is just like windows...modern distros are really eay to use.
But if you don't want to change, please take into consideration the dual boot option: you can use a small part of your HD to install linux and then, in case of emergency, you can switch to linux (just to have a working machine).
Or you can use both, and try to use linux as much as possible.

Malware is becoming more and more dangerous, but linux is not easy to attack once well configured.
Ciao!

+1 for Linux. I do have a windows partition on my PC only because I have a couple of programs I infrequently use that aren’t available for Linux. I spend 99 percent of my computing time using Linux. My favorite OS is Linux Mint. It uses the Ubuntu kernel but it is more user friendly, IMHO.

BTW I use the Cinnamon Edition but MATE is also a very good choice.

After the Woodford I won't find the Key to the .357.  But that is a very good thing.

I will approach Michael about Linux.  I am not a computer guy so I won't be installing it.

Consider Linux as a spare digital amplifier...something that maybe is not your cup of tea, but which whit you can live untill your 300b amp is up and running again  ::)

"After the Woodford I won't find the Key to the .357.  But that is a very good thing.".....    Yeah probably so, after the woodford you would fill the computer full of lead and then run around the neighborhood yellin' "with all this computer frustration, I cant remember whether I fired 5 shots or 6, so I gotta ask, who in the neighborhood feels lucky??!!!!........
