For the thrifty minded and tool short. Find box at Goodwill for 3$ or so, glue in some paint mixing sticks to support the plate, sand, varnish, and shorten the plate a little to fit. Luckily the box was was the perfect inside width.
Tools and stuff: Hacksaw, sandpaper, spray varnish, and masking tape to hold the mixing sticks in place while gluing.

Another idea that is inexpensive is to use a wooden cigar box for a base. That's what I love about this kit, it inspires ideas. Should I decide to build another, I might even incorporate a 'Fix' into the mix. Need a bigger box though.

Yeah, that's what I was originally looking for. I think the nice wooden ones are very rare, at least where I was looking.

jake111,
I was VERY surprised at how many are available at Ebay. Price is like $10-20 range. But as you mentioned, the size is not easy to find. There is, however an alternate route for this trouble. Simple like it is, the Q can fit in a variety of spaces, especially if you were so inclined to move the battery position down under. I have a feeling that you will eventually give it a go. I am happy to see that you were fortunate enough to find the right size to begin with. I really like the idea of remaking things from an unexpected past.

4K,
I agree totally. A found box with a lid would be perfect, just flip the top to access the batteries. I even contemplated some circular containers. It would look cool but take up more space.
