burn in

Grainger or anyone how long a break in for the Mundorf supreme in you experience ? I am burning it in as per your suggestions with the 5 ohm load. It has over 100 hrs but when I put it in it did not sound very good. So it is cooking some more now. Thanks Jan Olsen

I give most film caps 100 hours, a little over 4 days.  That is what I have been giving the Mundorfs and Clarity caps I bought recently.

Teflon caps get a week to 10 days.

Hey Jan, something is not right there if the supreme "did not sound very good". If you are using it as a bypass cap, then no amount of burn in will change the lack of chemistry with the cap you are bypassing. If the cap is on its own, in a coupling position or other signal path critical spot, then, I would say that the problem may be somewhere else and the supreme is making it worse.

From my experience, the Mundorf supreme 'house sound' is very precise and reveling, with good timber and depth, but there is a certain 'window' for the highs and high mids to make their presence know. They get out of the way of the sound if you will. I have used them as bypass caps, coupling caps, crossovers etc. I love em. Just wish they were cheaper!

This link/thread and hundreds of others were deleted in the last update.  So here are my modified break in instructions.

First find a good loud but not distorted listening volume.  I use my workroom system with a SS 120WPC Eagle 2C amp.  Place the caps on dual banana plug adapters and put a CD on repeat.

For film caps, PP & PTFE or PIO, 100 hours, 4 days will suffice.  For any version of a Teflon cap you need 400 hours, 16 days of burn in.

I am using them in a direct coupled, parafeed, with c4s 45 amp, with MQ NI eso45 and BCP 15grid chike. An early bottle head desig. The Mundorf 4.7uf is the parafeed cap. It is a fine amp,and the highs were not what I expect from this amp after 100hrs.

Ps this is directed to Eric sorry I did not see your name at first. Also in this design the parafeed cap is the only one in the signal path. Jan

Jan - no harm done..

I just thought of one other thing about caps that I have experienced. As your system changes, its good to sub a cap back in for another go every once in awhile. Sometimes you end up fixing other problems and now cap X sounds the best. I have noticed that especially with tube rolling.

Eric, funny you should mention that ,as I put the original parafeed cap back in, a sideralcap and I am enjoying the amps with them in! but I am cooking the Mundorfs tell I get 200 hrs on them then I will try them again. Jan O.

oh, ok Greg. Excuse me for the fancy name for your soldering iron! I guess I can now refer to my dick as my 'Johnson'. No, make that 'Mr. Johnson'.

Johnson, Earic? Really? Not Holmes?  Like, 'whats up Holmes?'  In my case, his name is Elvis. It gives new meaning to "Elvis has left the building".  The jokes are endless...

Mine is called "Thundar"... 8)

I can see this thread taking a really wrong turn here... haha , and remember we have a female member... Did I say "member"??  uhhh I meant a female residing within this forum..... phew....

Even if we didnot have females in the forum the laws of good taste apply here. I think both of you owe and apology to everyone. Jann Olsen

Uh oh, we are in trouble.... of course you understand that is why I said the thread was taking a wrong turn.... sometimes grade school jokes from grade schoolers like me just happen.... So yes, an apology IS necessary and here goes.... I apologize to all the females that reside within this forum... I was only aware of Debk, and thus was only referring to her.. So, thank you Jan for enlightening me to the fact that there are more than one... I appreciate it....  :)

Pretty much a tongue in cheek apology considering this is the 'bottlehead forum', with many products that have suggestive names, not to mention suggestive photos to show off some of the products. As an adult, I am not so offended by adult remarks, provided they don't dominate the subject at hand.
