I can't tell you the mechanics, one of the experts may chime in, but for me the it's a sweeter sound. I run them into full range horns so I have great mid range, but this gives the kick lower that I need for ordinary (non male/female vocals) music and the extension into the higher ranges to support guitar/piano/flute upper notes. I've a limited range to compare to, only Hammond and BH chokes but I prefer the Dowdy's. It gives me the best listening experience for the range of music I listen to, I've yet to say "Wow, this sucks" because the amp can't handle the complex passage or clear note (I play TexMex to Toccata and Fugue to Phantom and have no problems; rocking "Pride and Joy" for the neighborhood right now).
