Just finishing up my crack with speedball upgrade. Sitting hear listening to Pink Floyd Division bell remaster in total AWE with my crack/speedball fix and Senn HD-650. this is a such a different sound than my O2/Grado PS500 combo.

I used a copper hammerite finish for the top plate and PT and bell. Early american walnut stain and 3 coats poly semi gloss for the box.
Even if it did not sound amazing it was so much fun to use since it was built in my garage, BUT it does sound great.
First run thru and all checked out fine on the original build. waited a few days and installed the speedball and again no issues.

Congratulations!  A very nice look.  That is the same color scheme I did on my Eros.

Can you describe the differences you hear between your two headset systems?

Thanks Grainger,
Sorry for the really slow response. Had just replaced my computer and realized that some of my threads where not getting responses.
As far as differences go I am not into a lot of fancy terms but found the Grado/O2 to be a really fun Match up.The Grado's have a really nice mid's sound to them and are quite forward where as the Senn's are not quite as exciting as this combo but probably more realistic. The Senn combo just did not have me tapping my feet like the Grado's did. In the end that is what it is all about to me.

I did recently get to try a set of HD800's with my crack. This was not a wise choice as I have now acquired a used set of HD800's and have been absolutely floored by the sound of the Crack/HD800 combo. ;D ;D
I did not realize that a set of headphones could sound so truly real and out of my head as this setup is. A lot of folks refer to them as bright but with my years of live music and other loud hobbies i have a natural roll off above 14k that fixes that.

I love this combo so much that I sold the Grado's and O2. I also added a Meridian director Dac to feed the Crack and have been enjoying this for about 6 weeks now. I am probably going to sell the HD650's as well to make my wallet happy again or to fund a smaller closed back set-up for less quite environments like work.

What would you suggest now on the upgrade path? I already have a blue velvet pot laying around from another project and am thinking of either upgraded caps or C7X chokes to smooth the B+.

John,

Good description.  All that matters is that you enjoy the sound, that it moves you.

Sorry, I haven't listened to headsets much since the 70s.  Well, I had a pair of Yamaha folding headsets I traveled with when I worked for K-C.

There is a headphone folder on the board.  You might pose the question there.
