What is the gunk on top of the PC-3 plate choke brackets, & how do I remove it?

A merry post-Mayan apocalyptic Xmas to all!  ;D

I want to paint the metal brackets on the PC-3's for my Stereomour, but there is glue or something like it over the top. Please let fly with suggestions on the best way to remove it.

Thanks!

It is varnish that is used in the production process of transformers.  We use a bit of acetone to clean and loosen this gunk up, then a wire brush to remove it entirely.  This tends to be most necessary on the top surface of the PC3.

GOO GOO GA CHOO!
Eric, have you been breathing acetone fumes again?  :^)

Seriously, be sure you have adequate ventilation with that stuff!

Will do, Paul.  6 oz. of Cutex Nail Polish Remover, $1.78 + tax at the evil Wal Mart, vs. $9.95 for a quart of Acetone at Home Depot. Got a can of Rustoleum Gloss Black Lacquer for the paint shot after removal. Tape off the windings and terminals and off we go (not sniffing acetone along the way)!
