What happens when the batteries are depleted? :)

I have listened to my Quickie quite a bit, and I have accidentally left it powered on over night three or four times.  Does the Quickie just stop working when the batteries reach a certain critical point?  Or, are there audible signs of battery depletion before failure?  These batteries have lasted quite a long time so far for my first set.  This is very very nice.
