Rodrigo y Gabriela - dang

Their first CD is one of the standards that we turn to during the Mid-Atlantic Bottlehead meets.  There is a DVD with the CD as well where they even got through their technique of how to get the sound.  Cool to watch if you play guitar.

Being a little more into bass guitar (because my son has played bass since age 9)
Do a search for: Rodrigo y Gabriela on BASS "Tamacun"
Appears Rodrigo's fingers were made for the wide neck of a classical guitar.
The Dual I had in high school was a Dual 1214 or some special version of it, I bought without the plinth (from Olsen Electronics).
I had very little money and built a simple frame from 1 x 4 white pine to hold it. Probably no where near straight and level, but I had tunes.

This weekend will be 11 years since I built my first Bottlehead kit, a Foreplay I, which I still have and still works great.

Another guitar duo in a similar vein is Strunz &
Farah -- also breathtaking to listen to (as a former guitarist myself).

First TT?  Believe it or not, a Rek-o-cut mechanism and platter salvaged from an old console and which I built a very simple plinth for.  I don't remember what the tonearm was but it was all gold (or most likely gold anodized) and had one of those monsterous headshells, and the cart was a Shure V-15 type III.  Sure wish I held on to the rek-o-cut and the cart now :-).

BTW, the plinth had zero suspension, was terribly microphonic, yet a set of 4 pink pencil erasers (the rectangular ones) under it made it tolerable.

I heard an LP by them last night, the self titled album.  It was amazing.  I vow now that I draw real retirement I will support them by buying Vinyl, as available, and CDs.  A quick look there is no vinyl on ebay.  I did listen to nothing but vinyl at my buddy's house last night, he owns Raven Records here.

As I said last night, I have played the Guitar since about 1966, but I'm not talented.  I appreciate talent.

I received their self titled 2006 album on CD today.  It is over 100 so staying cool and listening is a good thing.

There is a good cover of Stairway To Heaven.  A good album all around but the sound is congested.  Can anyone say if the LPs are better?

I just ordered "Rodrigo y Gabriela / Area 52"

Will report back on how I like it.

Im especially lousy on an acoustic, I dont even own one any more.  Seen these two quite a bit on web videos, they are fun to watch and listen to.  Unique, interesting and both obviously talented, I gotta say though that im most impressed with Gabrielas strumming technique.  Cool stuff.

On their live in Japan cd, they cover Metallica's One.  It's something awesome.  (Also cover Metallica's Orion - which is also something awesome.)

And ... it amazes me that some of the forum members dig them considering a lot of what they cover.  Cool, very cool.
Seen them covering Slayer.  Acoustic duet of a Slayer medley enjoyed by some jazz and classical fans.  A reverse broadening of musical horizons!  Next, I'd suggest buying some original Slayer LP's or CD's.  Reign in Blood and South of Heaven are probably their most popular but the earlier Hell Awaits shouldnt be missed either ;D

So when they cover Slayer do they have like 100 acoustic guitars lined up on the stage?

;D  It was tounge in cheek.  No wall of acoustics or amps ...  But there is a video of a medley with some Zep, Metallica and Slayer thrown in.  Rodrigo intros with a little Raining Blood and South of Heaven and there is a bit of it laced into the piece.  At any rate, as an 80's Metal Head, I think it's cool that they encorporate some of that genre into some of their music.

I think its great to see that they made the connection.  When my friend said they were a flamenco group that played metal I couldn't see it, but clearly there's some cross over that works.  Apparently they were in a thrasher band before branching out.

Thanks to Craig I have their ST album on CD and two more CDs on the way.  They are smokin'!

Second one is in, Area 52.  It is the third one I bought so Live In Japan is coming shortly.
