Paramount output cap value

Hey all, I have a chance to try some Solen Teflon caps in my Paramounts output cap position, only issue is they are 2.7mf instead of the 3.3 I have in there now, is this ok to do??

Yes it's OK. Both values are on the low side but within the range that is usually acceptable. Since you are going to replace the caps, give it a listen with both caps in parallel (2.7 + 3.3 = 6.0uF total) after the teflons are broken in, to see if the larger capacitance works better or worse with your speakers.

Thanks Paul, another question for you....  what I have in there now are 3.3 Mundorf silver and gold, I also have some other Mundorf silver/gold/oil at 2.7 question 1-can I use them together parallel or would it not work and 2) what sonically would I hear with higher or lower mf caps??

The short answer is yes you can parallel the caps. With the larger values you might get a bit of bass extension. On the other hand bigger is not always better. you might lose some of the finesse you were looking for with the high zoot caps.

I think you better send the Mundorfs to me so you don't run the risk ...John

I have seen Paul post that the capacitor and your speakers interact.  So there may be more than extended bass with larger caps.

It's a lot easier - and way, way more accurate - to try it and see vs. trying to predict!

Paul's point is is well taken, trying it only takes a few minutes.  Regardless of the outcome you learn from it.  The results will probably only pertain to your system because of the speaker capacitor interaction but it will be useful to you and should be shared with the rest of us.  Do add what speakers when you post.

The speakers I am using are a set of " Cornscalas " lots of info about them on Bob Crites web site.  the Crossover has two caps in it-one 5mf Sonicap for the Squawker and one 4mf Sonicap for the Tweeter.  I am first going to try the 3.3mf paralleled with the 2.7 and see how it sounds and then I will try the 3.3 with the 2.0 I got from Grainger to try out( thanks a ton Grainger) and see what happens, I will report back to the group.

Ok, first impressions of paralleling the 3.3 and 2.7 together in my Paramounts id NOT favorable, less bass and kind weak sounding, clearly not what I expected, I will continue to listen to see if there is more break in required???
