Nice job like how you have left the caps on long leads that will make fitting the speedball later a breeze

I'm impressed with the braid and the twisted pair for the heaters.  Very regular intervals.

The soldering looks nice and shiny as well.

Thanks for the kind words all, I am pleased with the way the build turned out.

It has been 20+ years since I picked up a soldering iron. I learnt quickly that that my eyesight is not what it once was! I also have a lot more patience than I did 20+ years ago which certainly helped towards a successful build.

I built this with the Speedball upgrade in mind so where possible I made things easier for when that happens. Sooner than later :-)

Thanks again.

WJ,

I just noticed the Avatar.  Is that that Anne Francis that Robbie is holding in his arms?

Not specifically. The avatar is cropped from concept artwork for a FP remake that I don't think ever actually materialized.

Good eye ;-)

Yep, Rain Dogs is a great record for testing the sound. Nice choice! Are you using J.River with J.Remote? What DAC do you have?

Tom and I go way back (metaphorically speaking) ;-)

What you eye with the ''Rain Dogs album art displayed is a Nexus 7 tablet running the Sonos app. Besides various Sonos Play 5's littered throughout the house I have a Sonos Connect with SPDIF Coaxial out to to a PS Audio DLIII DAC. Just staring to experiment with Hi-Res audio and for that I use a MacBook Pro with iTunes/Bitperfect and an Audioquest Dragonfly DAC. 'Bad As Me' is great at 96/24, Tom sounds extra gravely, in a very good way.

How do you like the DL-III?  I like mine, but last year I peeked inside (couldn't resist), and it was kinda smelly. I figured that the caps must be going bad, and replaced them ( the power supply electrolytics). I also wished it had better USB capabilities,  but it is state of the art for its vintage. ( I'm waiting with baited breath for the Bottlehead DAC release)

I really the like DLIII, had it for many years and have not felt the need to replace it with something 'new & improved'. I do agree with you on the limited USB capabilities but I really only use it with my Sonos connect. I need to open mine up one day and replace the optical SPDIF connector which somehow got mangled. I will pay particular attention to the caps when I do. Thanks for the head up.

Really like the stain on your base - what did you use?

Thanks!

Witold

Thanks. I used Minwax Cherry 235, two applications since just one was a little too light for my liking. I did use Minwax Pre-Stain prior and finished off with 3 coats of Minwax clear semi-gloss poly.

now that you mention it my toslink is mangled too. the retention tab was too flimsy.
I'm using a Music Fidelity V-Link 192 to do the heavy USB lifting, then connected via coax to the DL-III. I think the laptop I use has a optical output through the 3.5mm jack, but never made the effort to connect it directly.
