My new tubes

pure love

Member
All matched and unused with excellent test readings. Can someone from Bottlehead confirm to me that the 6CM7 tubes which were included in my BeePre2 upgrade kit are matched? Would be a shame if they weren't. If someone has recommendations for sockets that match these tubes in terms of premium performance (I prefer gold and silver as conductors), dont hesitate :)

We try to match brands for visual consistency, but as Paul points out - matching doesn't make a difference to the sound so we don't invest the effort to match the tubes beyond that.

@Paul Birkeland Can you tell me the reason behind the choice of 6CM7s as an addition to the 300Bs in the BeePre2? Having two TV tubes inside my high-end amp just doesn't feel right. If possible, I would prefer exchanging them with a tube that has "hi-fi" models available. I dont really think thats going to be possible without affecting the sound and vision you had when designing the thing but asking doesnt hurt.

The 6CM7 is suitable for TV and amplifier use according to the datasheet.

There are several different ways to match a tube, but what will be audible in the BeePre will be that you have the same brand/construction. Electrical matching will not be audible unless you have one nearly dead tube and one super fresh tube. We provide NOS 6CM7s with the kit, so you don't have to worry about that.

How did your stock build go?
Well, I am not doing the stock build. I ended up planning to replace almost all things (sort of worked my way up from wanting to use different wire & caps to a custom chassis); at the end I will be left only with the power transformers, the PCBs, and most importantly, the layout/circuit from you. I believe your circuits to be very good, not just a product made to be sold but a product that sounds good. Currently I am working on the chassis. I want to CNC a custom stainless steel construction. If my Blender prototype is finished, I can show it here. I'm going to combine BP2 & C2A into one amplifier; the gain provided by the BP2 is just what I need because I really like distorted/raw sound for some tracks like this one:

. I may even add a guitar paddle for that reason. I prefer my phone speakers over Mojo2+HD600 for this one. And for songs that don't need a rough sound, the 300Bs will work their magic regardless. Was thinking of adding a choke, but I'm not so knowledgeable in that, so I might have to ask a few more questions.
