For a number of years I have been using a Rega P6 turntable with an Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge very successfully with my Eros 2 and my Bottlehead system, comprised of a BeePre 2, Kaiju, and Jager speakers. I just recently upgraded the P6 to a Rega P8 with the new ND7 moving magnet cartridge. The setup sounds glorious while actually playing an album, but upon turning off the power supply to the table I frequently hear a loud "pop" through the speakers. The problem is sporadic, happening about 50% of the time. At other times I either don't hear a pop at all or the pop isn't that loud. I don't recall my Rega P6 doing this, despite having a nearly identical Neo PSU running the table's 24V AC motor.
I have tried the P8 with the MM phono input of my Rega Elex integrated amplifier without the problem arising. I've swapped out the Neo PSU Mk2 of the P8 for the Neo PSU of the P6 and still had the popping noise problem. I took my Eros 2 into my Rega dealer, and he was able to replicate the popping noise on another P8.
While I can work around this problem by simply selecting another input on my BeePre 2 before turning off the P8 power supply, I am very curious as to why this popping noise is happening at all and if anything can be done to eliminate the problem.
Thank you!
