Images

I have tried without success to add an image to one of my posts. I get a message saying my file is too big. I realize that in order to do so I would have to reduce the file size, I have wasted the last 2 hours trying to figure out how this is done. I'd really appreciate some help. FWIW I'm using a Mac. Thanks

I use photobucket.com for hosting pics online.  They provide the links for various format websites including this one.  They can automatically resize your pics to more reasonable sizes too.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I find this excessively complicated since I am basically a computer illiterate. I did find a site that shrinks jpegs, you send them your image, it gets shrunk and sent back to you.

I asked the same question years ago, and for the same reason.  I have a PC and don't speak Apple.  So I am no help there.

I had to got to photobucket myself.  It is free and if you create an account I can help you insert a picture.

I'm assuming by "I'm using a Mac" you mean that you have a relatively recent Mac and no image editing software apart from what comes on your computer. iPhoto has some basic image editing capabilities; other programs have much more control and better tools, but this will get you up and running. I am using iPhoto 9.1.5 that came with Lion (10.7.2), so things may be slightly different in older or newer versions. If you select an image, you can choose edit and crop the image by selecting crop and moving the edges until you like them then click done. Cropping will shrink the file a bit and also allow you to be more selective than is always possible in camera. Then you can select export from the file menu and choose how much compression you are putting on your file. Increase the compression if the file is still too big.

I am a long-time Mac user and photographer. I've owned at least a dozen Macs and never a PC. So this is probably a good bet for you... Seashore, an open source image editor. I believe it's a bit simpler than Gimp. Gimp is the opensource equivalent of Photoshop. I also have Acorn, which is a nice simple editor but it's not free

You can export the photo using iPhoto to your desktop as a small/medium/large file and then bring it here. Or you can use Picasa a free application to edit the photo.

Thanks for the heads-up for the "export" function in iphoto. I'll certainly have look at seashore as well

You can also resize images (and change contrast color balance, etc.) in Preview on the Mac -- look in the Tools menu.

FYI, OSX Lion has a different save model than all the previous Mac OS versions... it auto-saves in most cases, and keeps versions to revert changes. This is great for most files, but bad for images you want to post as packing all those versions into the file makes it BIG. So if you are running Lion, use File > Export... to save a fresh, smaller file when you are done.
