Images do not resize - how to do this?

Every time I click on an image thumbnail attachment in a post, the picture is enormous and doesn't resize itself so I can see the damn thing.  Is this a problem with the forum software, or is there some setting somewhere that will allow the images to resize themselves so I can see the whole picture without scrolling around?

In my browser (Firefox), right-click and "open link in new tab" does the job.

You can download a free image viewer and resize the photo before posting it in thread.

A resize to 1000 x 700 provides good resolution.
