Don't over damp those speakers!

Just a short vent. In changing my system I did so too fast as usual. With new drivers (too me) in new cabs I ended up over damping the speakers.  These magic little drivers were driving me crazy trying to figure out where the sound went. Tonight I removed the extra damping and the magic returned. This goes to show, tune your system to your ear and take notes on the changes that you make! I'm extremely happy at the moment and have a feeling it's going to be a long night!

Also, take detailed measurments when you finally find that sweet spot for speaker placement. I've spent the last couple of hours moving the speakers 1/4" at a time trying to lock in that perfect image. It's surprising how sensitive the ear is at detecting very small changes.  I use the same piece of music with female vocals and simple instruments to dial it in. When it's right the voices feel as if they are in your room, singing to you.

When that sort of thing happens to me I have usually replaced the entire system upstream before I figure out I put in a little too much $0.50 stuffing in the speaker cabinets.

If tiny movements are shifting the image it might be time to consider more room treatment.

Dan my room feels like one big room treatment.  I'm listening in nearfield and have been moving my chair too much while making measurments. I've finally settled on a chair location and this has been the fine tuning part (small movements). These speakers are new to me by just a few weeks.
