Copper Crack

I posted this on Head-Fi, but I thought I'd post some pictures up here.  I decided to go another route with the top plate and woodwork than the supplied parts.  I bought an 18x6" copper plate and transferred the holes once I got the kit to use as a template.  Some drill press work, jig saw, and a lot of filing and it was ready to build.  I used a 1.5" hole saw to replace the cooling slots and lined the hole with 80 mesh brass screen and topped it with a bronze washer to cover the edges of the hole.

I've got about 8-10 hours of listening in so far and am about ready to install my Speedball.

That is a beautiful variation on the Crack.  What type of wood is it?

Do you have a place for air to enter at the bottom of the base?

The wood is red oak from lowes with "gunstock" stain. I put the supplied feet with the kit to allow for normal airflow. The base is about 5" high so there should be room for different caps down the road.

It is heavier, but not too bad.

Thanks,
Dan
