Cap question

Pouring over my Eros Manual (10-14-13) as I patiently wait for my next project, I notice the parts list shows 1.5uf/630V MP caps while the photos and instructions on pages 66 and 67 show 1.0uf caps. Is one value "more" perfect in that position, or do I just have too much time on my hands?

Hi Karl

If you take a look over some of the past posts on capacitor upgrades on the Eros phono thread you will soon find the design value is said to be 0.47uf.

"At the time that we put out the Eros, we had the 1.0uF Solen capacitor in our inventory for the SEX amp of that era.  When selecting the coupling cap for the Eros, we simply used the 1.0uF Solen because it was already in the inventory and it is a nice sounding cap.

Currently, the SEX parafeed cap is 1.5uF, so that ships with the Eros as well."

You will also find a few Eros owners using 0.47uf and 0.22uf boutique capacitors in that position. Some interesting info in some of the older posts and well worth a  look see.

Lastly congratulations on picking up a Eros in the promotion its a super bit of kit.

Jamie, thanks for the info.
I have read quite a few Eros threads, especially the latest round that seem to coincide with the previous sale. (2 Eros sales relatively close together, does this point to a new BH phono kit in the works? Hmmmm...always trying to read the tea leaves.)
Cap values seem to have wide latitude in many positions, often appearing to be assigned by availability and personal preference. I was just curious if there was a design center for this one.
Anyway, I am very much looking forward to what the more refined circuit and added gain do for my Stereomour.

The Eros sales weren't really that close together. We had a Reduction sale a little while back and it was very well received, so we thought people might appreciate an Eros sale. Vinyl continues to amaze everyone with it's return and growth, and it seemed like we ought to do our bit to help that along.

The output caps can very, but the caps for the RIAA are specific, so that equalization is correct. Also, the caps in the shunt regulator need to be the same value as pervaded in the kit.

Doc, again thanks for making one of your TOTL kits so available, even if I was trying to write my own plot line into the BH story.
Brad, thanks for the reminder. I put two 0.015uf Clarity Caps in my Reduction and have stuck with stock values elsewhere, even locations where there is wiggle room.
