A temple for music...

I don't subscribe to any audio magazines -- print -)) or online, and I don't even often read them (I used to), and I even more rarely come across something that really hits the nail on the head for me and just resonates with me and my sensibilities.  In the last year or so I've found one particular publication that seems more than worth the read everytime I read an article from it -- that would be the defunct Sound Practices magazine.  Now select articles from this mag are published in Enjoy the Music (along with VALVE articles) and this month's article reprint is probably one of the most enjoyable that I've ever read and to me captures the essence of what this whole DIY/Ultra-Fi thing is about, and exactly what I've been striving for in building and outfitting my own personal temple to music.  So, from one  artist/mad scientist to the others of similar bent out there, enjoy:

Hey Jim,

It was a couple of years after Sound Practices ended, I had 3 or 4 copies of the print magazine and even though it was way over my head a the time, I found it really interesting.
I think Southern Electric (or whoever it was) was offering the full catalog of issues but they must've been going though some kinda transition or something 'cause I just couldn't seem to make the connection to get them.

To make a long story short(er), a year or two ago, I finally did get my hands on the cd.
It went in a drawer with a bunch of other software cd's and there it was,.. until you make this post that is!

Who knows how long it woulda collected dust if you hadn't mentioned it.

Hey Steve,

When you take a look at it, can you let me know if it is actual text or a collection of scanned images of the original pages?  If there is actual, computer readable text, then I'll buy the CD.

Thankyou for sharing that link... you just made my day! 


Audio has become as much of a spiritual pursuit in my life as it has a pass-time...  its during those late night listening sessions when I feel the most like myself..  the creative and curious being I was born to be..  satisfying an insatiable desire to experience the beauty of human expression.

I am far from being able to integrate this passion into a design stage (at my current skill level), but with each new kit and project I complete... I feel that I am getting closer.

A very sincere thankyou to all of the folks in the bottlehead community for introducing me to DIY audio. I have never been much of an artist or performer, but this hobby has shown me a way of incorporating creativity into my life that I can finally relate to.

You guys probably hear it enough, but keep up the good work!  ...you are all doing something important, and it is very much appreciated.

Hey Matt,
You're welcome, and thank *you* for letting me know that this meant something to you too.

I don't really have any other hobbies aside from audio and wood and metal working anymore so really everrything I have goes into these things, which probably makes them something more than a hobby or even an avocation.  The only real disappointing part is that there are so very few others who I can share this with in the same way.  Of course my wife likes music too, but she is not an audiophile by any means and while we do have a lot of similar musical tastes, there is a lot I listen to that she doesn't like, and vice-versa, and beyond that, it's hard to find times when we even feel like listening to the same thing.

Anyway, don't sweat it about the design aspect -- I have the formal background but have lost much of it and still have lots of holes to fill in before I'd even consider a totally, from the ground-up design.  I can see that could be a great exercise and rewarding in it's own right, but it doesn't keep me from loving what I'm doing at the level I'm at.  And no matter how good I may eventually get, there just isn't room for much improvement over what BH offers.

Hey Jim,

Took a look and the folder contains a pdf (not scanned pages) and an autorun.INF.
I'm not familiar with what you'd need for your computer to read the text, but I'm able to search the text on my mac.
It does appear to me that these are the files that the print magazine was printed form.

Great news -- if the text is serchable, that is all I need to know.  Appreciate the help.  I'm going to order the CD today.
